Drappier ~ Grande Sendrée 2008

Champagne – Pinot Noir, Chardonnay

The Grande Sendrée takes its name from a parcel of land covered in cinders (cendrée) after the fire which ravaged Urville in 1838. A spelling error having crept into a new version of the land register, today Sendrée is written with “s”, not “c”. On very light soils made up of “crayot”, the Chardonnay displays a very fine elegance while the Pinot Noir, with its slight predominance, brings power and great vinosity.

The 2008 vintage is considered a great year in Champagne. Harvesting began on 15 September in ideal conditions. The grapes, healthy and well formed, displayed lovely acidity and had high sugar content.

This champagne presents itself in a ravishing pale yellow robe with topaz nuances. Time has used its patina to reveal the wine’s complexity. Hawthorn blends with acacia honey, beeswax and marzipan. When it is aerated, the wine resumes its murmurings, quince jelly meets raspberry jam and alternates with bergamot and warm brioche. On the palate it is invigorating, imposing and it teases the taste buds. The bead caresses and balances wild strawberry jam with ripe blood orange. This harmony is extended in a delicate minerality and a lovely bitterness in which hints of mandarin orange come through.

Ideal as an aperitif. Goes perfectly with bouillon of crayfish and grapefruit, poached turbot with sauce hollandaise, scallop carpaccio, rack of lamb with foie gras, creamed Bresse fowl with tru es, mountain comté at least 18 months old. Serve at 7°C.

Champagne – Pinot Noir, Chardonnay

In the 1960s, when he was not at the Elysée Palace or on official business elsewhere, General de Gaulle would reside at his property, the Boiserie in Colombey-les-Deux-Églises, situated a few miles from Urville. There he discovered Champagne Drappier and chose a cuvée rich in Pinot Noir (80%) which was renamed in homage to him.

Very fine nose of citrus fruits, apple, almond or perhaps nutmeg. When it reaches the palate the Charles de Gaulle Cuvée exhibits a remarkable complexity, with an airy mousse and lightly candied notes.

Ideal as an aperitif. Pheasant stuffed with foie gras, mixed green salad with strips of guinea fowl, Brie de Meaux. Serve at 7°C.

Piccini ~ Prosecco

Prosecco – Glera

Prosecco as a Piccini wine makes perfect sense for the Piccini brand : it’s an extremely friendly wine, meant to be enjoyed fresh, more fruit and vivid, than complex and austere, more playful and lively than toasty and yeasty. The Piccini family bears a special love for the wine, because Prosecco is in Treviso exactly what Chianti is in Tuscany : a life style and a cultural legacy marked by centuries of tradition tracing back to antiquity.

Intense fruity with rich scent of apple, lemon and grapefruit. A pronounced aroma of wisteria in bloom and acacia flowers. The floral aromas clash with a pleasantly bitter citrus rind note that is inherent in Prosecco grape (glera). Vivid and fresh, with a fine, persistent perlage.

Prosecco is a fantastic wine food. Fantastic with antipasti, from olives to aged cheeses to roasted peppers or marinated artichokes. Wonderful with freshwater fish and sea food. Because it is so easy to pair with food, Prosecco is a wine to summer up your day all year around! Serve at 6°C.

Eikendal ~ Charisma 2018

Stellenbosch – Shiraz, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese

All three cultivars are handpicked and cooled down. After fermentation the wine is allowed to settle clean. Shiraz and Petit Verdot go into 500l old Burgundian barrels and the Sangiovese will be blended into the previous vintage Charisma – meaning, for example, in Charisma 2018 the Shiraz and Petit Verdot are 2018 vintage but the Sangiovese is the 2019 vintage. The idea with this is to blend that beautiful freshness and Italian passion into the wine. Shiraz and Petit Verdot are aged for 12 months before blending and bottling.

The Charisma 2018 is an ingenious creation at the hand of Cellar Master, Nico Grobler, inspired by his travel experiences across the globe. The Shiraz (Rhône Valley) lends a tight, fresh structure with aromatic and seasoned undertones. Petit Verdot (Bordeaux) contributes a rich berry character and the Sangiovese, in true Italian style, adds fruity flavours with flair on the palate.
